Coshocton County Townships and Ranges

The Unites States Military District (USMD) was established 1 June, 1796. It's boundaries on the north are the Greenville Treatly Line, on the east the Seven Ranges, on the south the Refugee Tract and Congress Lands and on the west by the Scioto River. All of Coshocton Co. lies within the USMD.

The purpose of the USMD was to satisfy the resolutions of Congress (1776 and 1780) which gave bounty land to officers and soldiers of the Continental Army.

Survey of the USMD began in March 1797. This divided the land into townships, and then subdivided the land into quarter-townships. The Ranges are numbered east to west and the townships are numbered northward from the base line.

By 1823 the United States Government had issued 10,958 warrants, totaling 1,549,350 acres for Revolutionary War service and more were issued under various laws thereafter.

Warrants were later exchanged for land script which Veterans often sold to land jobbers without ever having seen the land.
